Zara Kuchi

Artist Statement

Zara Kuchi was born in Cornwall 1977. She studied art at Carmarthenshire College of Arts and Technology and went on to graduate from Falmouth College of Arts with First Class Honours in 2000. Having travelled in South America and Europe and now raising two children in West Wales she draws together her experiences of life and visual culture in an on-going body of work. She has a deep interest and appreciation of the art of all cultures, new and old. Kuchi is primarily an oil painter but works with other mediums to develop her personal aesthetic.

Zara Kuchi 2012

Kuchi writes: 'Mankind is borne forward by narrative and that inspires my figurative work: 'stories' extracted loosely from issues of womanhood, multiculturalism, the interconnectivity of man and earth and references from world/folk mythologies. Characters are evolved and added to a growing cast and through them I can speak of what concerns and interests me. Anthropomorphism, the universal and timeless 'Mother and Child', the east-European 'love-bird' and the masculine Rooster re-occur throughout my work to tell my stories or present a tableaux through which the viewer can read their own.

Ideas are sketched in watercolour, mono-print and ink and from them I can distil a setting for my oil paintings. As a canvas develops, ideas, story and characters take second place as the handling of paint and the conveyance of something more wordless assume primacy. I am chasing a light on my peripheral vision and am never entirely certain where the light will settle.

Decorative motifs and repetitive mark-making play an important role in my work. They provide textured surfaces within my compositions and are a helpful meditative tool in my studio practice.'
